Foss Archive – new stuff on it’s way

There’s actually a lot more ‘stuff’ than it looks in the picture, apologies for the blurry quality due to fading light and an iphone camera.

Left to right are book covers, various magazines, cartoon strips, stack of book covers at the front, invites to Joy launch, on the floor film visualisations for AI and I think a German film project, French film festival posters and flyers, calendars, Games Workshop visualisations, architect plans for a project Chris assisted. A pop up book concept, photos of models, the plastic not human kind and various yet to be identified bits and pieces.  If anything sounds/looks interesting post a comment below and I’ll start scanning that pile first!  Cheers. I’m very interested in the black and white drawings since they there are of them circling around the web. Hope to see more of them in Hardware

Hi, JP, Grant & Bos. Thanks for the 3 votes for AI visuals, I appreciate your input. I’m just trying to figure out how to scan A3 pages on an A4 scanner. The pages I have are black and white photocopies, I’m trying to find out from Chris if he has better quality copies, but in the mean time I will throw the ones I have up. More content coming soon. Cheers Imogene

Anything related to MALIBU and/or UCAR ads in that pile ?
    ; )

    Thanks in advance !

I love Chris’s work: as a youngster growing up in industrial Yorkshire his vision what might be – as exemplified with Panther books for example – was both immediate working engineering) and inspiring (a future in space).

The only problem was that oft-times the promise of Chris’s stunning rendition was not matched by the quality of the authors prose (E.E “Doc” Smith springs to mind). But it’s a credit to Chris that he took the germ of an idea – no matter how buried it might be – and turned it into something that sticks with me to this day.
    Is the book out yet?

    Best wishes

    David

Hi David, yes so many people have said this, I don’t think it made Chris popular with some of the Authors!

I have a stack of spaceships as yet to be identified, the Malibu spaceship is lurking somewhere amongst them. Do you have a copy of the Maibu advert, it’d be great to see it, or if anyone else has a copy do email it to foss@chrisfossart.com

  8. David Sondered

    Games Workshop renditions.. Very. Interested.

I do some occasional work for sublicensors of GW and Cris being a huge inspiration on just about everything outside the GW sci-fi worlds made me both intrigued and interested in seeing GW related material from his paper and paint. I didn’t think it existed… sorry. Excited now…

Hi David, I’ve got a copy of one of the visualisation Chris did for Games workshop artwork. I’ll start uploading new stuff after the book launch on the 21st. Thanks for the reminder. Imogene

  10. Imogene Post author

Cheers David, I’m going to start uploading new stuff to the site after the book launch and I’ll add GW stuff to the top of the list.

Love the video, the advert is a classic, and the voice over – those are certainly some très sérieux et très important batteries! Chris did do an Ad for batteries in France, but I think it was just for print, thanks for posting.

  12. FRED

    You’re very welcome Imogene !
    : )

Yes, I think I recall Chris’ battery advert print… It was a HUGE format iirc.

I also have a 1979 TELERAMA TV program with a cover and a 2 pages itw with Chris, I could send you high rez scans if interested ?

    ; )

  13. Imogene Post author

Yes, please, high res scans would be great, it’d be great to get these in the archive/on the site and perhaps in a future book if Hardware goes well. I use SendSpace for big files and it’s free. You could email the sendspace link to: foss@chrisfossart.com. Many thanks Fred.

My copy of Hardware arrived today, in a package so big I thought I’d mistakenly ordered a fridge! It’s truly massive in dimension, weight and depth of content. Countless dozens of unseen images, beautifully laid out and arranged and colour reproduction that makes the ships fly off the page. I’d consider myself fairly well-acquainted with Chris’s work, but I had no idea of his vast back catalogue of work. Hats off to Imogene and Rian for compiling such a beautiful book.

I echo Bos’s comment with regards to B&W images. Maybe a small portfolio of Chris’s development sketches and finished B&W drawings could be put together?

Many thanks to Chris for the continued inspiration and opportunities to dream the dream.

Just ordered “Hardware” and eagerly await its arrival.

    Many thanks Imogene!

  16. Simon

Copy of “Hardware” arrived this very morning perfect condition and well worth the wait indeed!!!

Thanks to Imogene & “the crew” for putting the superb collection together and of course to Chris for the continued inspiration.

Just wanted to say that it was great to meet you last week at Forbidden Planet and to thankyou personally for many years of excellent artwork. It was worth the train journey and pouring rain ! Special thanks for the sketch ! The book is fantastic and I will get great pleasure from looking at it for many years to come !

    Cheers,

    Martin.

  18. Imogene Post author

Cheers Martin, I will make sure Chris gets your message. It was a very soggy rush hour evening so thanks for making the train journey into central London, I’m really glad you got to chat to Chris and are enjoying your sketch and the book. It’s great getting this feedback, thank you. All the best, Imogene.

Hey Fred, thank you both for the Telerama Magazine, it seems like it’s from another century (which it is!). So funny to see Chris’ artwork which still seems current juxtaposed to the old adverts for TV’s and hair products, fabulous, thank you!

  20. David

Hi, as a great fan of Chris’s works on the covers of all of the sci-fi I’ve read over the last 35 years or so, I’ll definitely be ordering the book!

However, I have a question… did Chris create the cover art for the James Blish title ‘A Torrent of Faces’ (published by Arrow in PB form in 1978?

The style is very reminiscent of his, but it’s uncredited.

  21. Imogene Post author

Hi David, thanks for your comment. It’s prompted me to start uploading all the book covers. I’m just working on creating the James Blish gallery now, but yes Chris did do the Torrent of Faces cover, picture gallery on it’s way soon. Cheers.

  22. Brian Johnson

    Hi Chris!

    Long time no chat………

Glad to see you are still hard at it.

    Regards,

    Brian

Hello Mark I enjoyed your review and thanks for the link to the site.

Re Crash, Chris was never a fan of the book and thought it was so weird when he first read it he threw it across the room!

Re MIA artwork, if enough resurface, perhaps, if Rian is willing, we could do a Hardware II. Chris often didn’t bother to get a transparency of the artwork and would just leave it with the art director and on to the next one, he never imagined at the time we’d be scrabbling around 40 years later to locate all these cover pictures. I wonder how many originals are lurking forgotten in attics?

Yes, an index would have been lovely, I did ask for one, but for various reasons it didn’t go ahead. I dream of a definitive alphabetical list of the artwork in the book, if anyone wants to volunteer to do that, do get in touch!

  24. Mark

Thanks, Imogene: that means a lot. I would LOVE a Hardware II.

Sadly I have no originals locked away in the attic, more’s the pity.

Does Chris have any idea how many covers he’s done over the years, though?

Re: Alphabetical list – count me in! Could be something offered online, couldn’t it? Feel free to contact me on the email if you want to look at it further, Imogene.

  25. Imogene Post author

That’d be great, although quite a task. Maybe the task could be split between a few people. Good idea putting it online, I could add links to specific image pages.

  26. StevenB

Would be thrilled and fascinated to see the AI artwork.
What did you think of the final film? What would you say are the biggest differences in the ideas/visuals between the versions you worked on with kubrick and Spielberg’s movie?

  27. Joseph Pearson

Imogene, I have a database of several hundred books with Chris’s covers, listing title, author, publisher, langauge and year printed. It may be a starting point for someone…

  28. Imogene Post author

Hi Joseph, that sounds good, can it be exported to an excel file, each heading in it’s own column? The ideal would be to eventually have a searchable/sortable excel doc, with a small thumbnail image too.
