    Hi Patrick
I’ve posted the answer to your question:
‘What would you say is the most important aspect of a Spaceship painting?’ at the beginning of our conversation also.
    —————
Hi, I am a huge fan of Chris Foss and his paintings. So much so that they have inspired me to study spacecraft for my Art A-Level this year. I was wondering, as it is part of my required essay, would it be possible if I were to receive some answers on questions I have regarding his views on spacecraft and how he created his unique, iconic style of painting. It would be a great benefit to my work and what could be better than asking the artist of whom inspired me to do this topic. I’m in my final year in St.Mary’s Grammar School, Northern Ireland, and I would be grateful if I was able to get some input from Chris Foss, in the form of a few questions. If that would be possible, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
    Best Regards,
    Patrick

    Hello Patrick
Would you like to post your questions here and I’ll endeavour to get Chris to answer a few of them.

Certainly, And thank you very much for the quick response.

    1. How did you become interested in painting Spacecraft? Was there a spark that ignited your desire to become involved with science fiction Art?
    2. Did you always intend to be an artist?
    3. Who would you say inspired you most throughout your career?
    4. Do you have any favourite science fiction shows/movies?
    5. Is there any particular spaceship design or past science fiction art that you where inspired by the most?
    6. What is your favourite medium of art?
    7. Briefly, what would you say is the most important aspect of a Spaceship painting?

    Hello Patrick
All your questions, I believe, should be answered by the intro in Hardware. There’s 8000 words of me chatting with Chris and it covers most of your questions. Have a look at that and if there’s still some gaps do get back to me.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1848566980/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=chrisfnet-21&linkCode=as2&camp=1634&creative=6738&creativeASIN=1848566980“>Hardware: The Definitive SF Works of Chris Foss

Perhaps your college or local library could order it in for you if the price is too steep?

Books ordered! I look forward to receiving it. And if there is one thing, I just found out that I’m also expected to include unique answers directly from the artist, as well as quotes and answers from secondary sources like the book.

Would it be possible to get a sentence or two answering each of those questions above? The more detailed answers I will quote from the book of course, but having those few questions answered would be perfect for the artist contact paragraph
    Thanks,
    Patrick

Hi Patrick, when you’ve had a chance to look through the book, perhaps you could narrow your questions down to one or two that haven’t been answered by the intro and I’ll put these to Chris. Are these conversations, being included in your research evidence? I’d better make sure my spelling and punctuation makes the grade! Cheers.

Hi again, I just received the book this morning and can I just say, it’s magnificent. And you are completely correct, it does cover most of my questions perfectly, his inspiration and favourite mediums are all answered. The work itself is gorgeous as well, having seen his paintings only from this site and other places online it contains hundreds of outstanding pieces of art I’ve never seen from him.

And to answer your question, yes this is part of my research evidence of an essay I am doing entitled “What makes an Iconic spaceship painting”. And since the book goes into such great detail which I can quote, this only leaves one question which I would be delighted if you could answer for my research:

1.What would you say is the most important aspect of a Spaceship painting?

And once again, thank you very much for taking the time to answer these
    Many Thanks,
    Patrick

Hello Patrick, saying I’m completely correct, puts you straight to the front of the queue! I will try and pin Chris down on your question it’s quite a big one – it might be something to do with perspective and space, I know he was very influenced by cowboy and western tv shows as a kid. I’m seeing him in a couple of weeks so will try best to get a good answer for you. Glad you like the book. Best wishes, Imogene

Just wanted to say thank you again for such a brilliant video response. I couldn’t have asked for a better answer.

    Thanks again,

  3. Hi Imogene,

I’ve been to the website before, as I’m an admirer of the spaceship covers that Chris produced over the years.

Just reading an article on the BBC about the 50th Anniversary of “The Joy of Sex” and amazed to discover that Chris did the black and white illustrations for that landmark work.

So, while reproductions of those illustrations might be out of place on this website, I’m surprised it does not at least get a mention, for historical reference

  4. Oops! Spoke to soon, I see you have referenced it under News, rather than Biography. Good show!
    ———
    Hi Brendan
Thanks for your post, I must admit it was the BBC interview that prompted my post and we do need to include more info on Joy. We also hope to do some Joy prints around February.
    All best

  5. Hi,

Are there any of the 100 special editions of Hardware still available, Jim?

    Hi Jim
Sorry for the slow reply here’s a link to Titan’s online shop for the 100 edition.
    Cheers, Imogene

  6. Terence Wachtman

    Hello.
I have just purchased and am awaiting the delivery of the Deluxe version of Hardware. I am sure you get this all the time but, I was wondering if I were to mail you my copy of the book, could Chris sign it and make a comment or two for me in the book? I have been an avid fan of Chris for some time and when my partner showed me his TTF (spacehips 200-2010) book which features Chris’s work, I about fainted. I had not seen the book since I borrowed it from a local library as a child. Yeah, I know, You can get the book on Ebay and the like nowadays. I guess I am just silly that way.
    Please consider my request.
    Yours Truly,
    ~Terry W.

  7. Hi Terry

So many people talk of discovering 21st Century Foss in a library – or book shop – hopefully these entities are going to be around for the next generation of SF fans to stumble into and upon interesting books.

A few people have asked about sending the book to Chris for a dedication. Unfortunately we don’t have an office to receive or send out the book so Chris would have to collect the book from the local postal depot if he missed the delivery, do the the inscription, re package and then queue up at the local post office – as you can imagine it would be quite time consuming. Incidentally all the prints on the site can have a personal dedication added.

I’m sorry for any disappointment and I appreciate you getting in touch.

    Best wishes
    Imogene

I have just watched a short video of Chris talking about his Joy of Sex publication celebrating 40 years… and I just wanted to say what a charming man he is, and what a pleasure to listen to someone talking with humour, compassion and warmth, and unpretentiously. Thank you! My son is 10 yrs old and is passionate about drawing naval ships, military vehicles and military scenes (I am an illustrator as well..) I will be showing him your work this evening to inspire him further…
    Thank you once again, Kate.

More questions than answers, I’m afraid!

  10. Hi there
    great site
I actuly have several jigsaws from the late 70′s featuring Chris’s work.
The reason for my contact is i wonder if the works are available as a slide show? I am a school librarian and have several books with his covers. We are just about to get an overhead projector and a screen saver would be great. If not, its a good idea isnt it?
    ———————————-
    Hello Jeff
The works are not currently available as a slide show, it is a good idea. What’s the name of your library, whereabouts in the world are you?

I’m presently tracking down copies of Gavin Lyall’s first five novels that were printed by Pan paperbacks in the early 1970s. Chris Foss was the artist and I’m wondering if you would have a photo of the cover of The Wrong Side of the Sky so I know what to look for. Thanks.

    Hello Jack
I’ll have a look after Christmas.

  13. Dear Chris, first a word of thanks for feeding my imagination with those awe-inspiring images when I was a young lad of 12. They have stayed with me ever since (well over 30 years).

My question: are you at all involved in pre-production work for the forthcoming FOUNDATION movie? See:

    http://www.scifimoviepage.com/upcoming/previews/foundation-movie.html

I am asking my other half for HARDWARE for my birthday in May this year … my copy of 21st CENTURY FOSS is safely in the garage, though slightly dog-eared by now…

    Best wishes: Andy

    Hello Andy
It’s lovely to hear Chris fired up your 12 year old imagination. Chris hasn’t been asked to be involved in the Foundation production. Glad you’ve still got your copy of 21st and I hope you enjoy Hardware, Rian Hughes has done a fantastic layout and worked tireless to locate missing artwork, it reads like a comic book. Best wishes, Imogene Foss

  14. Hi Imogene,

I’ve been a huge fan of your Dad’s work since I was a lad in the 70′s. I discovered his work through buying Pan paperbacks by Isaac Asimov and the like. I only bought the books because of the covers!! Indeed some of the books are to me now, as an adult, unreadable, but the covers are still ace. I notice that you offer a range of prints for sale; are you intending to expand the range? I ask because some of my favourites don’t appear to be available as prints; is this because of copyright issues?

    All the best,

    Neil.
    ____________
    Hi Neil
That’s great you’ve been a fan since the 70′s and still have the Asimov books. Let me know which artwork you’re interested in buying a print of. It may be that we have it and I haven’t uploaded it to the site yet. If you’ve got Hardware or 21st Century Foss you could let me know the page number and I’ll let you know.
    Thanks for getting in touch.

  17. Hiya As I may have mentioned via word of mouth, Twitter & Facebook I am trying to raise some funds for The Bristol Autism Project, until September this year they were ran and funded by Bristol City Council (Local UK Government) but due to cuts National Autism Society had to step in meaning they are getting a bare Min in funding. We love your fathers work and we very much hope you can help .

My son James has Aspergers and it’s hard for him, trying to mix with “Normal” Peers. He feels anxious and angry at times because they don’t understand him and he can’t communicate his feelings and intentions.

Daily life is a struggle for him socially and he isn’t the only one.

There are many children in Bristol who are in the same position some can talk but others can’t, they often can’t play with other children and don’t have friends like us.

The BAP provide a service during the school holidays to take these children on trips and local outings to help them and their carerers.

They get to mix with each other and you often find they feel a lot more relaxed with children in the same situation.

We are trying to fund a soft play session at least once during the holidays and to do this each session costs £275 because they can’t mix with other children they have to hire privately and as you can imagine that’s costly. We are aiming to raise £1k for the year.

So as Mum of a son with Aspergers I am taking this fight on, to help fund these soft play sessions and this is where I grovel for help.. If there is any way you can donate an item to be auctioned off to help raise money we’d be eternally thankful.

So far we have help from RichiePaint, INKIE,Cheo, Lorraine Kelly, Stephen Fry & Professor Green, Emma Watson & Dog the Bounty Hunter & we just need a little more support :0)

We are looking to auction off Original Art Pieces either Illustrations / Oil on Canvas / Watercolours’ / Acrylics or Pastel or sculptures and fabric pieces but must be original works (Or Low numbered prints) as we have some prints already and we wanted to raise the art shows profile with your piece!
Are there any items you would be willing to donate?
It will be 100% original to our auction. I would be more than happy to advertise your website and works.
We are holding the show 28th April & 29th April @ The CentreSpace Gallery Bristol UK with Auction Sat evening.
If you wanted to be on our feature wall then you can add pieces into the show, all we ask is you donate 10% of your total at the end of the show. Pieces need to be ready to hang and sent 1st March.
I hope we hear from you in the near future and that you don’t mind us asking for help. We do hope you can help us.
